With health and wellness on the forefront of most people’s minds these days, there is so much variety when it comes to fitness classes…I swear every week there is something new that launches. Although its been around for several decades, it is only over the last 10 years that its gained widespread popularity, which can most likely be attributed to Hollywood celebs claiming this form of exercise is behind their post baby slim-downs. For years, the Pilates Reformer Machine used to intimate me, so I had subjected myself to only Pilates mat workouts – and turns out that was a huge mistake! The machine is large enough to accommodate full range motion, which works wonders for building strength and increasing flexibility. The instability of the rolling carriage with the springs set at different levels of resistance provides all kinds of stability challenges that promote better balance and develop core strength…and the stronger the core, the better the balance, posture and overall well-being.
A few months ago I attended my first official Pilates class at Toronto’s Eden Pilates, a beautiful, light space located in the city’s Rosedale neighbourhood. My introductory class was the “Groundwork” a mix of both mat and machine exercises and is perfect for those just getting into Pilates, and like me, want to get over their fear of the Torture Chamber aka the Reformer Machine. And trust, once you try it out, you will love it!
Known as a foundation for developing flexibility, tone, strength and focus, practicing Pilates has helped me in many ways. s a devout runner, plymetrics trainer and former tennis player, my muscles have been short and tight for most of my life. Also, I am a chronic pain sufferer and have a disease called Fibromyalgia – Pilates specific breathing patterns have helped decrease muscle tension in my shoulders and neck, while the flow of exercise has assisted in re-balancing my muscles with my joints.
With a variety of classes each week, the amazing instructors at Eden Pilates will ensure you get a full body workout in either private, semi-private or drop-in group classes – utilizing various mat based props, Spring Walls and the V2 Max Reformer ( the latter if it’s not your first time to the rodeo!) During the month of May, Eden Pilates is treating YOU to your first class for a limited time only!
