Alright, alright…I keep complaining about wanting to drop 5 lbs by the end of the summer in preparation for Fashion Week this fall (please don’t judge me) but clearly Jelly Modern Doughnuts has literally put a monkey wrench in the “Sasha Slim-Down” plan. The Calgary cult fave gourmet doughnut shop opened it’s second location here in Toronto steps away from Kensington Market earlier this month and as you can imagine already has a ton of loyal customers, such as myself. JMD’s treats are made fresh on-site throughout the day in so many flavours, you literally won’t know what to do with yourself – think Peanut Butter Cup, Red Velvet, Coconut, S’mores and Maple Bacon, just to name a few…with of course classic options like Jelly, Vanilla and Chocolate. I feel it must be noted, these circular pieces of heaven are quite sizeable, but they also offer mini’s for those who either want to sample multiple flavours or are intelligently watching their caloric intake.

I’m quite embarrassed to admit but I opted to purchase roughly 12 mini’s, which was in the sake of research and split between myself and two cousins, and also so I knew exactly what to purchase during my next visit. The clear winner for me was the Peanut Butter and Chocolate. Dipped in peanut ganache and filled with frothy, whipped peanut butter. It is so fresh, fluffy and light, it’s like sinking your teeth into a heavenly cloud.

Gourmet is not a term I like to throw around loosely, but with the flavour offerings, gluten free options and ingredients that are locally sourced and organic where possible, I’m quite comfortable using this word to describe Jelly Modern’s delectable masterpieces.

Although the doughnuts are sublime, which can be ordered in holiday event trays, packages and gift boxes for almost any occasion, there really isn’t any seating for people to “eat-in” (which is annoying for people like me who can’t wait to get home to consume their purchase), with the exception of a small bench inside and four chairs/2 tables outside. The latter will be completely useless once Toronto’s Fall and Winter weather roll’s around.

My mouth is literally salivating as I type this post and seriously thinking of making today yet another “cheat” day! Have you tried Jelly Modern Doughnuts yet? If so, which flavour is your fave>
